One of the many questions I get during the planning process with couples is what traditional things do I HAVE to do during the ceremony and reception.  My answer?  Only what you want to do!  In reality, you will want guests to feel like they are at YOUR wedding.  Not one they attended last month, not the one they saw on Pinterest and not what their mother did at her wedding.

Don’t like chalkboard signs?  Do something else or none at all.  I promise your guests will still sign the guestbook and find out what your signature drink is!

Don’t have the traditional family unit?  Make the processional work for who you want to walk you down the aisle.  The bride’s BFF is a guy – then make him the Man of Honor!  I personally love seeing grandmothers as the flower girls.

Ultimately, make your mark on your wedding so the guests can see your personalities, hobbies or favorite things come through in your wedding day.  A couple who ran ultra marathons had a starting gate that they came through during intros.

Don’t be afraid to go away from the traditional “required” things if it doesn’t fit your style!

Have your guests sign your guitar, ride in on your show horse, make a Lego box for your nephew the ring bearer to carry and have your daughters join you in the first look.  Do you and it’ll be epic!
